I’m currently rereading 1 and 2 Kings, one of the most gruesome sections of the Bible, in the process of reviving my Jezebel monologue for the next show (September, tbc). I’ve been getting fulminously irritated about sword-wielding bigots like Elijah, so was delighted when Eug directed me to this page on Cracked:
The Nine Most Badass Bible Verses
a wickedly funny run-down which includes mention of Elijah’s slaughter of 450 ‘prophets’ (probably devotees) of Baal, the fertility religion brought into Israel by the proud, capable, and much-hated foreign queen, Jezebel. After his, sorry, YHWH’s, impressive fireworks, Elijah organises the massacre of the foreigners, in response to Jezebel’s ‘butchering’ (execution is my guess) of Yahwist prophets (probably for public excoriation of the queen).
Still and all, the priests were just one dangerous faction in a very volatile land. Jezebel kept a hold on power for over thirty years: longer than her husband, longer than her sons, longer than the dude who killed her. Suck on that, Jehu.

Christ but Catholics are gruesome. Not to mention grossly bizarre, politically ridiculous, and either blandly disingenuous or painfully suggestible. My sister, a church-watcher if ever there was one, sent me this story from the Sydney Morning Herald.
Ceremonial farewell for Pier Giorgio
Note: “His relatives say his body was intact and corruption had not set in when his coffin was opened in 1990… The coffin will remain closed in Sydney.” Apparently one of his virtues was handsomeness. Not any more, I guess.
I’m sorry. ArtOfBeing was going to be a totally WYD-free space. Not another word, I promise.

Despite first daring me to go public about him, my latest inamorato has had a change of heart and begs me not to publish the blog entry introducing him to you, my dear readers. I know that’s infuriatingly tantalising, particularly to those who had been alerted to an imminent major disclosure, but of course I have to respect his wishes in this, particularly since he is to mean a great deal more to me as – as he puts it – a member of my team.
The entry is up, however, as a private post. So you just have to get together with me and a net-connected computer to become privy to a few intimate details of my latest and most precipitous revolution of the heart…
